"Music creates order out of chaos: for rhythm imposes unanimity upon the divergent, melody imposes continuity upon the disjointed, and harmony imposes compatibility upon the incongruous." - Yehudi Menuhin

The video you just watched was the 1987 hit record from rap duo Eric B. & Rakim. And like the beginning of the video said, this virtual field trip, is a journey into sound!

More specifically, this is a close examination of:Screen_shot_2011-08-08_at_5.15.04_PM.png

Erick B. & Rakim kick off our lesson by introducing us to the first type of music we will be looking at in our three day examination of music and lyrics.

For each type of music:

  • a photo slideshow will show images related to that genre and the culture it inspires

  • four songs will be suggested (students can choose their own songs and have them approved by the)

  • the lyrics will be dissected for the use of metaphor, simile, alliteration and other literary devices discussed in class

  • the overall themes or messages of the songs must be discussed among the members of each group

  • students must identify the types of instruments, if any, that are used

After the images, music, and finer points of the lyrics have been discussed, each group must review the genre and the songs in a 200-word short response paper. (Four songs per genre = Four short responses per genre)
